The Archies

About the Artist

The Archies were a fictional American pop band created for the Archie comic books and cartoon show. They became a real musical act in the late 1960s with fun, catchy bubblegum pop hits.

The group was created in 1968 by producer Don Kirshner. The “band” was made up of cartoon characters: Archie, Jughead, Reggie, Betty, and Veronica. The actual singing and playing was done by studio musicians. Ron Dante sang lead vocals on most songs. Other musicians included session players from the Wrecking Crew.

The Archies made bright, upbeat bubblegum pop music with simple melodies, cheerful lyrics, and a light, fun sound. Their songs were designed to appeal to teenagers and younger listeners.

Their biggest success came with the song “Sugar, Sugar.” The track first reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 during the week of September 20, 1969. See the Top 5 Songs for the week.

“Sugar, Sugar” was one of the biggest hits of 1969. It sold over six million copies worldwide and became a classic bubblegum pop anthem. The song was so popular that many people thought The Archies were a real touring band.

The Archies had several other hits including “Jingle Jangle” and “Bang-Shang-A-Lang.” They released albums and appeared regularly on the Archie cartoon show. The project ended in the early 1970s, but their music is still played today.

The Archies remain best remembered for their joyful, sugary 1960s sound and as one of the most successful fictional bands in music history.
