The Tornados

About the Artist

The Tornados The Tornados were a British instrumental group formed in 1960, best known for their 1962 No. 1 hit “Telstar”—the first U.S. No. 1 by a British group (pre-Beatles). Produced by Joe Meek, the track featured a clavioline (early synthesizer) for its futuristic, space-age sound, inspired by the Telstar communications satellite. Written by Meek (credited to Geoff Goddard), it topped charts in the UK and U.S., selling millions. The lineup included Clem Cattini (drums), Alan Caddy (guitar), George Bellamy (guitar), Heinz Burt (bass), and Roger Jackson or Norman Hale (keyboards). Follow-ups like “Globetrotter” and “Robot” charted in the UK but not U.S. The group disbanded in the mid-1960s after Meek’s death (1967). As of 2026, no original lineup remains active (most members deceased; Cattini is the last surviving original and occasionally performs). “Telstar” endures as a pioneering electronic instrumental, featured in films, space documentaries, and nostalgia compilations. The Tornados symbolize early 1960s British innovation in pop and electronic music
