Hugh Masekela
Hugh Masekela was a South African trumpeter, composer, and activist who gained international recognition for his music and his role in the anti-apartheid movement. Born in 1939, he began his musical career in South Africa before going into exile due to apartheid.
He achieved global success with the 1968 hit “Grazing in the Grass,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. His music blended jazz with African rhythms, creating a distinctive and influential sound.
Masekela used his platform to raise awareness about social and political issues, becoming a prominent voice against apartheid. His work extended beyond music, as he was deeply involved in activism throughout his life.
He returned to South Africa after the end of apartheid and continued to perform and record until his passing in 2018.
