Gary Lewis & the Playboys Gary Lewis & the Playboys were an American pop-rock band fronted by Gary Lewis (born Gary Harold Sarowitz, 1946), son of comedian Jerry Lewis. Formed in 1964 in Los Angeles, the group included Lewis (vocals/drums), Carl Radle (bass, later with Derek & the Dominos), John West (guitar), and Dave Costell (keyboards). Starting with Disneyland gigs, they signed with Liberty Records. Debut “This Diamond Ring” (1965, No. 1 Hot 100, written by Al Kooper et al.) launched seven consecutive Top 10 hits: “Count Me In,” “Save Your Heart for Me,” “Everybody Loves a Clown,” “She’s Just My Style,” “Sure Gonna’ Miss Her,” and “Green Grass.” Their upbeat, harmony-rich teen pop sold millions amid the British Invasion. The original band disbanded around 1970 due to Lewis’s Vietnam-era draft and changing tastes. Lewis pursued solo work and revived the Playboys name for touring in the 1980s onward, focusing on oldies circuits, veterans’ benefits, and occasional shows (still active into 2025–2026 with limited dates). With 17 Top 40 hits, 45 million records sold, and gold certifications, they represent the clean-cut, fun side of mid-1960s American pop.
