The Troggs

About the Artist

The Troggs The Troggs were a British rock band from Andover, England, formed in 1964 (originally as The Troglodytes), renowned for their raw, primitive garage-rock sound. The classic lineup featured Reg Presley (lead vocals, 1941–2013), Chris Britton (guitar), Pete Staples (bass), and Ronnie Bond (drums, 1940–2004). Signed to Fontana, they exploded with “Wild Thing” (1966, No. 1 U.S., written by Chip Taylor), featuring Presley’s snarling delivery and simple riff—later covered by Jimi Hendrix. Follow-ups included “With a Girl Like You” (UK No. 1), “I Can’t Control Myself,” and the tender “Love Is All Around” (No. 7 U.S., 1968; revived by Wet Wet Wet in 1994). Their primitive, sexually charged style influenced punk (The Ramones, Sex Pistols). Frequent lineup changes occurred; Reg Presley died of lung cancer in 2013. As of January 2026, The Troggs continue with Chris Britton (lead guitar, on selected gigs), Chris Allen (lead vocals), Stu Clark (guitar), Martin Shorrock (drums), and Dave Peters (bass). They tour actively, including the 2026 Happy Together tour. Inducted into halls of fame, The Troggs’ gritty energy and anthems bridge 1960s beat music to punk’s raw roots.
