About the Artist

The Marvelettes

The Marvelettes were an American girl group from Inkster, Michigan, pivotal in Motown’s early success. Formed in 1960 by high school friends Gladys Horton (lead), Katherine Anderson, Georgeanna Tillman, Wanda Young, and Juanita Cowart (later additions/replacements included Ann Bogan), they auditioned for Motown with “Please Mr. Postman.”

Reworked by label staff, it became Motown’s first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (1961), beating out competitors and establishing the company nationally.

Hits followed: “Playboy,” “Beechwood 4-5789,” “Don’t Mess with Bill,” “When You’re Young and in Love,” and “The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game.” Known for sassy, youthful R&B/pop with teenage perspectives, they influenced later Motown acts like The Supremes. Lineup changes due to personal issues (Tillman’s illness/death, Cowart’s departure) shifted dynamics, with Young taking leads on later tracks.

The group disbanded in 1970 after 23 pop hits and 21 R&B chart entries. Inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Michigan Rock Hall, The Marvelettes remain celebrated for launching Motown’s girl-group era and delivering timeless teen anthems.
