About the Artist

Bobby Lewis (1933–2020)

Bobby Lewis was an American R&B and rock ‘n’ roll singer best known for his 1961 blockbuster “Tossin’ and Turnin’,” the year’s top-selling single. Born Robert Alan Lewis (likely in Indianapolis, though dates vary between 1925 and 1933), he grew up in an orphanage until adopted at age 12. Developing his voice through church and local performances, he moved to New York and signed with Beltone Records.

“Tossin’ and Turnin'”—a lively tale of sleepless nights due to romance, written by Ritchie Adams and Malou René—topped the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks in 1961, sold over a million copies, and became a dance-floor favorite with its upbeat rhythm and energetic delivery. Follow-up “One Track Mind” reached the Top 10.

Despite the massive hit, Lewis had no further major chart success and faded from the spotlight amid industry challenges. He continued performing on oldies revivals into later years. Lewis passed away on April 28, 2020, at age 95 (or around 87, per some accounts).

His signature song endures as a classic of early 1960s party rock and a benchmark for one-hit wonders with lasting cultural impact.
