Nino Tempo & April Stevens

About the Artist

Nino Tempo & April Stevens Nino Tempo & April Stevens were an American brother-sister pop vocal duo known for their playful, spoken-word style and 1963 No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit “Deep Purple.” Born Antonino LoTempio (January 6, 1935, Niagara Falls, New York) and Caroline Vincinette LoTempio (April 29, 1929, Niagara Falls), they grew up in a musical family. Nino was a child actor and saxophonist; April began recording as a teen in the 1950s. Reuniting in the early 1960s at Atco Records, their breakthrough came with a rushed, improvised version of the 1930s standard “Deep Purple,” featuring Nino’s spoken verses over April’s sultry singing and a swinging arrangement. It topped charts for a week, won a Grammy for Best Rock & Roll Recording (1964), and sold millions. Follow-ups included “Whispering,” “Stardust,” and “All Strung Out,” blending jazz, pop, and novelty elements. They were part of the Wrecking Crew session scene (Nino on sax and vocals). The duo faded after the mid-1960s but performed occasionally. April Stevens retired and passed away on April 17, 2023, at age 93 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Nino Tempo continued music work until his death on April 10 or 12, 2025, at age 90. Their quirky, charming hit remains a 1960s pop staple.
