Tommy James and the Shondells

About the Artist

Tommy James and the Shondells Tommy James and the Shondells were an American pop-rock band fronted by Tommy James (born Thomas Gregory Jackson, 1947), known for bubblegum and psychedelic hits in the late 1960s. Formed in 1963 in Niles, Michigan (as Tom and the Tornadoes), they scored their breakthrough with “Hanky Panky” (No. 1, 1966, a 1964 regional hit revived nationally). Signed to Roulette Records, they delivered smashes like “I Think We’re Alone Now” (No. 4, 1967), “Mony Mony” (No. 3, 1968; later a Billy Idol hit), “Crimson and Clover” (No. 1, 1968), “Crystal Blue Persuasion,” and “Draggin’ the Line” (No. 4, 1971). James co-wrote many tracks, blending catchy hooks with innovative production. The original Shondells disbanded in the early 1970s; James pursued solo work and survived industry challenges (including mob ties to Roulette). As of 2026, Tommy James continues touring actively with The Shondells, with 2026 dates including Las Vegas (March 20), Toppenish, WA (April 11), and appearances like the Minnesota State Fair (with Herman’s Hermits). His enduring catalog remains a staple of oldies and classic rock radio
