Dion (born 1939) Dion DiMucci, known simply as Dion, is an American singer-songwriter from the Bronx, New York, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer whose doo-wop roots evolved into folk, blues, and introspective rock. Leading Dion and the Belmonts, he scored 1950s–1960s hits: “I Wonder Why,” “Teenager in Love,” “Where or When,” “Runaround Sue” (No. 1, 1961), “The Wanderer,” and “Ruby Baby.” After surviving the 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper, he went solo with successes like “Abraham, Martin and John” (1968). Overcoming addiction, he shifted to Christian music in the 1980s before blues/folk revivals. Recent works include Blues with Friends (2020), Stomping Ground (2021), and The Rock ‘n’ Roll Philosopher (2025). As of 2026 (age 86), Dion remains active: new music, concerts planned for 2026 (per site and reports), and ongoing tributes (e.g., jukebox musical The Wanderer). Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1989), his streetwise voice and enduring creativity span eight decades of American music.
