The 5th Dimension The 5th Dimension were an American pop/soul vocal group formed in Los Angeles in 1966, blending R&B, jazz, sunshine pop, and Broadway flair. Original members Marilyn McCoo (vocals), Billy Davis Jr. (vocals), Florence LaRue (vocals), Lamonte McLemore (vocals), and Ron Townson (vocals) scored massive hits on Soul City/ABC: “Up, Up and Away” (1967, Grammy winner), “Stoned Soul Picnic,” “Wedding Bell Blues,” “One Less Bell to Answer,” “Last Night I Didn’t Get to Sleep at All,” and medley “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In” (No. 1, 1969, from Hair). Their sophisticated harmonies and optimistic sound sold millions. Townson died in 2001; McLemore in 2021. As of 2026, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. (married since 1969) continue as “The Original 5th Dimension” or in tributes, honoring the group’s legacy through performances and remembrances (e.g., 2026 posts celebrating Ron Townson). The full group is no longer touring, but their catalog thrives in oldies radio and revivals. Inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, The 5th Dimension pioneered crossover vocal excellence and defined late-1960s feel-good pop.
