Peter and Gordon Peter and Gordon were a British pop duo formed in 1963 by Peter Asher (born 1944) and Gordon Waller (1945–2009), achieving fame during the British Invasion with melodic hits. Asher, brother of actress Jane Asher (Paul McCartney’s then-girlfriend), met Waller at Westminster School in London. Signed to Capitol/Columbia, their breakthrough was “A World Without Love” (1964, No. 1 US and UK, written by Lennon-McCartney). Follow-ups included “Nobody I Know,” “I Go to Pieces” (written by Del Shannon), and “Woman” (another Lennon-McCartney composition credited to Bernard Webb). Their clean-cut harmonies blended folk-pop and soft rock, with eight Top 40 US hits. They disbanded in 1968 amid creative differences. Asher became a successful producer/manager (James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, 10cc) and Grammy winner. Waller pursued solo work and occasional reunions. They briefly reunited in 2005 for performances. Gordon Waller died of a heart attack on July 17, 2009, at age 64. Peter Asher continues producing and performing into his 80s. Their sophisticated sound bridged early Beatles-era pop and adult contemporary.
